Manie van Rensburg's TV adaptation of the novel by J. van Melle, about a beautiful but poor young woman who marries the rich landowner instead of the man she loves. The story follows Pop le Roux's decision to marry the much older Jan Greyling and the consequences for her young love Hermaans Cronjé, her parents and for Jan Greyling's son Gert.

Episode 1

Pop le Roux and her parents, Sagrys and Griet, are bywoners on the land of rich farmer Jan Greyling. Pop is a beautiful young girl with many suitors – but she only has eyes for one of them, their neighbour Hermaans Cronjé. Widower Jan Greyling also has his eye on Pop, however, to her parents’ great joy.

Jan Greyling’s son, Gert, runs into Pop after she’s spent the whole day ploughing. He mocks her and her dusty appearance, but he gets a nasty surprise when she hits back.

Hermaans returns from the city, full of stories and good news – only to find out about Pop’s engagement to Jan Greyling.

After her wedding, Pop struggles to adjust to her new life as the wife of a rich man. At first Gert is making life difficult for her, but after a while they begin to make friends.

Jan Greyling is considering entering politics and goes to the city. Back home, the friendship between Pop and Gert takes a dangerous turn. Meanwhile, Hermaans returns to the farm to bury his father, and Pop realises she still has feelings for him. Then Jan returns from the city, and it’s not long before Pop discovers she’s pregnant.

Finale. It’s ten years later. For Pop’s birthday, Jan and their son Kleinjan spoil Pop with gifts and breakfast in bed. Shortly after Jan has left to check on the animals in the veld, Pop’s parents arrive with more gifts. When Jan’s horse returns without him, Pop knows something’s wrong and goes to find him. Pop finds him just as he’s about to die from a heart attack. After the funeral, Gert makes fresh passes at Pop, but she’s not interested. Instead, she goes to the city to find Hermaans – but he is not the Hermaans she once knew and loved.
