TV series, 1992

Award-winning drama series following the rise and fall of Dolf Groenewald, who grows from poor orphan into supermarket magnate. After his parents' death, young Dolf Groenewald goes to live with the family of Jollyboy Roodt, his father's former partner in crime. Jollyboy has two children: Herman, who becomes Dolf's greatest adversary; and Rika, who is deeply in love with Dolf - though the love of his life is Santie, the girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, just like him.

Bill Faure's epic and controversial series about the legendary Zulu king. The series was produced by the SABC, but in order to get around cultural boycotts against South Africa, the corporation made a deal with American production company Harmony Gold to distribute the series abroad. The SABC even hid their involvement completely in some countries. Despite the controvercy, accusations of apartheid propaganda and many historical inaccuracies, the series became incredibly popular. It was seen by millions across the world, including in America, England and West Germany.

Drama series about a woman who seems to bring tragedy and misfortune to those close to her. At the end of their matric year, three school friends - Maryna, Karen and Dina - visit a fortuneteller. What starts as good fun takes an ominous turn when the seer fortells tragedy in all three their lives - and all caused by Maryna, "the dark one". While Dina doesn't hold much stock to the prophecy, it threatens to ruin Maryna's friendship with Karen.

Acclaimed drama series following a group of Boers during some critical events in South Arican and Afrikaner history. The first series is  set mainly on St. Helena and follows the fate of the Boer prisoners-of-war of Deadwood Camp. Among them is Sloet Steenkamp, a Cape Rebel who had his death sentence commuted to a life-sentence on St. Helena. But for Sloet, life behind a barbed-wire fence is a fate worse than death, and from the outset he plans to escape and return to his wife and farm.

Family comedy. Bets lives with her mother, Mart, who is determined to find her widowed daughter a new husband; her son Jakkie, a second-year-student at the Rand Afrikaans University; and her 30-year-old daughter Annette, who moves back home on the eve of her third divorce. Jakkie's girlfriend is Marie-Lou van Wyk, who had published her first poetry book as a high school student. She is also vegetarian and gets terribly upset when Tant Mart dares to wear her fur coat.

Children's series with songs, dancing and loads of action. The Rompelstompel is a jolly, proud creature with beautiful feathers. His friends in Rompelstompelland are Boetie and Bella Bop, as well as Daan, Dina and Dirkie Doemela, a student who is always looking for answers in his thick book. The Doemelas and the Bops aren't aware of each others - and when they finally meet, the sparks fly. There's also the Pokkelpensie, who eats anything in sight, and the mysterious and feared Trommeltrammeltrap.

Youth series about a bright, talented tomboy, Saartjie Baumann, and her friends. Saartjie, Anna and Lina are thick as thieves and get up to all sorts of mischief in Lynnekom, a town not too far from Johannesburg. They are often joined by Galpil and his friends. To their great irritation, there's also Saartjie's little brother Apie, who likes making life difficult for our three friends, as well as Anna's little sister Muggie, who always wants to tag along.

Character comedy about the people of a smallholding somewhere near Johannesburg. "Maplotter" refers to a rather vulgar, common person living on such a plot - and so our Maplotters are colourful characters trying to scrape by on their piece of land. Molly Mitchell is a industrious widow who knows everything about welding and fixing cars, but nothing about fixing a good meal. At his death, her no-good husband left her his smallholding, but also a load of debt.

Cut-out animation series about Mrs Dumbleby, her housekeeper Crumms and their many interesting friends. Their adventures take them to the circus, the fair, Spain - even outer space and the time of the dinosaurs! Mrs Dumbleby is often accompanied by her three little friends and dog.

Youth series set in 1917 and following the adventures of Patrys and his friends Spekies, Olifant and Jan Flap - not to forget the girls, the cheeky Meraai and the shy Sybokkie. The series was based on E.B. Grosskopf's well-known 1926 novel.

Drama series following four members of the South African amry's reconnaissance unit ("reccies"). There's farmer Paul Roux, a former reccie and computer expert; Major Kurt Möller, who leads a group of reccies; Staff Sergeant Ben Davids, his right-hand man; and Corporal Arrie Swiegers, who has joined this group of reccies against his rich father's wishes.

Drama series based on Esta Steyn's award-winning serial in Sarie magazine, which was published in book form in 1985. The story follows the lives of the small community on the West Coast. After many years in the city, Hawert returns to his childhood home. He hopes to develop Sabbatstrand, a piece of land that his father had left to Hawert's adoptive sister Lyla. She hates him for abandoning their father before his death, and the animosity between the two grows. Meanwhile, the former owner of Sabbatstrand, the wealthy Jack Zwiegelaar, is also trying to get his hands on the land.

Drama series about the travels and adventures of a Rosie, a pink little car imported from Detroit. The series starts in the late 1920, when Rosie's American owners are forced to sell her. She lands up in South Africa, and the moment he sees her, mechanic Willie Last falls head over heels in love. For the next 40 or so years, she has many adventures with her different owners - from being a wedding car to a chicken coop. Will Willie ever find her again?

Educational series in which Doffel, Babbel and Bekkie learn about things like shapes, big and small, loud and soft, similarities and differences, going to the dentist and many more. They often get visits (and gifts) from their good friend Tjoefie.

Puppet series about the Kapoene, who lives in Pampoenland (Pumpkin Land), a mischief-making dragon called Droendraak, his two henchmen Tor and Slak, and the clever hero Poenie, who always saves the day.

TV series, 1987-1996

Children series set in the sunny town of Pumpkin Patch and featuring the mayor, Uncle Bill, Woofles the watchdog, puppet cousins Freckles and Speckles and friendly presenter Laurel. In 1991, Laurel won a trip around the world and had to bid the pumpkin patch farewell. In her place came Claire, who joined the others until the series ended in 1996. Sometimes, among the stories, fun and make-believe, the pumpkin choir would sing a song.

Romantic drama series about the love triangle between a dying doctor, his wife and his childhood friend. Marnitz Malan suffers from an incurable disease. He seeks treatment at Lebanon, the hospital where his childhood friend John le Roux is practicing. Marnitz encourages a friendship between John and his wife Laura. Meanwhile, Marnitz' father Burg has held a grudge against John's now dead father for many years, and nursing sister Linnie Theron is hiding a secret and a fatherless child.

Drama series described as one of the first Afrikaans soaps. When Daan Lategan's mother dies in a car accident, his aunt tells him that his father is not the man who'd brought him up. He meets his real family, but doesn't reveal his true identity. He feels attracted to his father's stepdaughter, Jeanne, but she's already involved with a trouble-making boyfriend. After a fight with her stepdad, Jeanne leaves home and Daan lets her stay in his house in town. Soon the gossip starts flying - and Daan can't keep his secret to himself for much longer.

Drama series about the ocean - "Ou Grote" - and its sway over a small West Coast fishing community. The wealthy owner of a modern fish factory has ambitions of expanding, but the only available land is an old cemetery. One man, a fisherman whose father lies buried there, is determined to stop the development. The face-off between the fisherman and the rich businessman - as well as a good dose of fish and diamond smuggling - threaten to tear families apart and end in tragedy.

There's Sweet Venter, the embittered, power-hungry gym manager who also owns the local sawmill; gym instructor Isabel; her daughter Nellie, whose father's identity is a secret; Rudie, a promising gymnast who leaves school to help his father; and another promising gymnast Pierre and his influential father, Wannenberg. In the first episode, a now 30-year-old Nellie gets an unexpected letter, which makes her think back to the gym and the events of 20 years earlier.

Drama series set towards the end of the 18th century, in the time of the Republic of Graaff-Reinet. Guillam Woudberg, who lives on the frontier, learns that he has just inherited two prize farms in the Cape Boland. There is one condition: that he lives on the farms himself. This doesn't suit him, so he gets around the proviso by marrying a beautiful girl from the Boland, Suzette Davel. This arranged marriage, along with tension between the English government and a group of rebels lead to a lot of action and intrigue.

TV adaptation of the hugely popular 1981 radio drama, about the murderous "wolf" terrorising the residents of Hotel Nyala - particularly the new receptionist, Sonja Daneel, whose memory loss seems to hide certain horrors in her past, as well as the identity of the murderer. But will she remember before she falls victim to the killer's axe? The TV series had new twists and intrigues. In 2012, Wolwedans in die Skemer became a film and another novel, once again with new surprises.

Youth series about the people of a small rural community. Rus en Vrede is a sleepy little town until the arrival of the Landman family, who is weighed down by the debt left after the father's death. At first, the introverted Dawid Landman gets targeted by the local bullies, but he wins them over and they become best friends. He also meets Linda Retief, who takes him to her secret hiding place - a place called Dreunkrans.

A talented new writer is awarded the sought-after Basson prize for his debut novel, Die Enkeling. He fails to appear at the awards ceremony - in fact, he seems to have disappeared. An intrigued magazine journalist, Carina Human, decides to investigate and soon she starts unravelling the story of Jacques Rynhard's life. She discovers a tragic story in which a young boy is accused of shooting his father, sent to reform school, rejected by his mother and betrayed by the people he loved the most. It's not long before Jacques becomes more than a story to Carina.

Pieriewierie lives in a magic tree in Pieriewieriepark and gets regular visits from Parkie, the park caretaker; Sonja the vegetable seller; Mr. Postman; and the children. There's also Bravo Brak and Crescendo Kat, the glamourous cabaret pair who sing beautiful songs about all sorts of interesting topics.

Youth series about a woman detective who gets stationed in a small Free State town. Rieksie Rautenbach gets sent to Blesbokfontein and quickly decides to get the station back into shape. Her station commander doesn't seem convinced that a woman could be up for the job and they are constantly at odds with each other. But Rieksie doesn't stand back for her colleagues and often gets the bad guys, whether it's thieves, kidnappers, drug dealers or murderers they're after.

Period drama set in the days of the Witwatersrand gold rush. The series followed the parallel stories of Deborah von Albein, a beautiful and stubborn young woman, and her great-granddaughter Irene. In 1886, Deborah and her mother are forced off the family farm in the Western Cape, to the goldfields of what was fast becoming the new town of Johannesburg. Here Deborah falls in love with a dashing Irishman, Kit Malloy, who has already made his fortune and is one of the most influential men in the Transvaal. But instead, she marries Karel, the weak and spoilt son of mine magnate Kurt Mannheim.
